Most people at the rehab center thought Martin Graves simply had trouble hearing. At sixty-four, with a strong frame but a history of neck injuries from his years in construction, he often leaned forward when someone spoke. To the casual observer, it looked like nothing more than a habit.
But Rebecca Hartman saw something different.
Rebecca, fifty-eight, was the lead physical therapist—the kind of woman whose calm presence made even the most stubborn patients soften. She had been working with Martin for three months, helping him rebuild strength after a fall on an icy driveway.
Every session followed the same routine: careful stretches, measured steps, slow breathing.

He looked up, surprised.
“Stronger doesn’t always mean tougher,” she added. “Sometimes it just means honest.”
Martin exhaled, tension loosening from his shoulders.
